Laurel Alumni Association Holds 25th Awards Banquet

            On May 16, 2015, the Laurel Alumni Association held its annual awards banquet at the Laurel Fire Hall.   There were a total of 14 scholarship awards given to 11 high school seniors – all children of Laurel Alumni Association members.  This year scholarships totaled $23,100, and brought the cumulative amount given by this 800+ member organization to over $491,000, since it was founded 25 years ago.  The banquet was attended by nearly 300 members and guests, and was officiated by current Laurel Alumni Association President, Janet A. Morgan who oversaw the presentation of  $1,500. scholarships to the following students.     

 LOGAN DOWNES, daughter of  Darrell (’81) & Lezlie Downes of Laurel, is a graduate of Sussex Tech   High School.  

 BRENDAN GRADY is a graduate of Neshaminy High School in Langhorne, PA where his parents, Christopher & Lori Ann (’81) Grady, call their home.  Brendan plans to attend Bucks County Community College.

 MORGAN HASTINGS is a Laurel  High School graduate and the daughter of Keith Hastings & Alison Price (’90) of Laurel.  Her scholarship was given on behalf of the Laurel High Class of 1960, with the award presented by Mr. Wayne Smith.   Morgan has plans to attend Delaware Technical & Community College this fall.

 ALAN LUBINIECKI, son of Shari Sheridan Lubiniecki  (’85) of Laurel, received the Laurel Alumni Scholarship on behalf of Avery and Helene Owens.  Dr. Gary Owens, in memory of his parents, presented Alan the award.  Alan is a graduate of Laurel High School and plans to attend  Delaware Technical & Community College.

 CONOR MATTHEWS, a graduate of Sussex Tech High School is the son of Anthony & Karen (’86) Matthews of Lewes, DE.  

KELSEY MULFORD, daughter of Ephraim & Donna (’85) Mulford of Laurel, is a graduate of Sussex Tech High School.  Kelsey has plans to attend the University of Delaware where she will major in cognitive science in her studies to become a speech pathologist.

 SHELBY MURPHY, received the Laurel Alumni Scholarship on behalf of contributor the Bank of Delmarva.  She is a graduate of Delmar High School and the daughter of Michael Murphy (’82) & Tracy Worster of Laurel.  Shelby has plans to attend ­­­­­­Washington College.

 EMMA SMITH of Glen Bernie, MD, is a graduate of Catholic High School in Baltimore.  She is the daughter of Robert (’86) & Dana Smith.  Emma’s scholarship was given in honor of past (2004-05) Laurel Alumni President , Kim Blackmore Littleton (’79).

 HUNTER VEAZEY, son of Klay (’89) & Wendy (’89) West of Laurel, is a graduate of Sussex Tech High School where he plans to continue his studies to become an electrician.  Hunter’s Laurel Alumni  Association was through a donation from the children of John Wiest and the Delaware Nursery and Landscaping Foundation.

 KATELIN WHALEY, a graduate of Salisbury Christian High School, received the Laurel Alumni Association scholarship donated by the David H. Elliott family in memory of B. Thomas and Bessie H. Elliott.  Mr. Elliott presented the award to Katelin.  She is the daughter of Scott (’86) & Kim Whaley of Laurel.           

 SARA JO WHALEY was presented the Laurel Alumni Association scholarship from Virginia Whaley on behalf of the family of Rep. Biff Lee and given in his memory.  Sara Jo is a graduate of Laurel High School and the daughter of Jeff (’80) & Susan (’84) Whaley of Laurel.  She will be attending Salisbury University in the fall.

In addition to the above, three special, merit-based scholarships were awarded to the following outstanding students in the amounts shown:  Helen Kirk Deputy Ellis Scholarship ($3,600) – to Sara Jo Whaley as presented by Kendal Jones; the George Schollenberger Scholarship ($1,500) – to Alan Lubiniecki as presented by LAA President Janet Morgan; and the Carolyn Calio Memorial Scholarship ($1,500) – to Morgan Hastings as presented by Carolyn’s daughter, Katrina Braham.

Incoming Laurel Alumni Association President, Scott Phillips (’67), presented outgoing President, Janet Allison Morgan (’72) a plaque of appreciation for all her hard work and dedication this past year.  Afterwards, certificates of  recognition to a number of distinguished members and groups.  They were:  Most Senior Lady Member – Sarah Marie Callaway Trivits (’39); Most Senior Gentleman – Jim Allen (’42); Traveled the Farthest – Donald Hill (’55) & Larry Hill (’58) (tie) 950 miles; and, Class with Most Attendees – LHS Class of 1965 (19 members).    Mr. Phillips then went on to introduce the other officers who will be joining him on the Alumni Association board next membership year.  They are: 1st Vice President - Randy Lee (’70); 2nd Vice President – Dr. Gary Owens (’67); Immediate Past President – Janet Morgan (’72); Recording Secretary – Virginia Whaley (’83); Corresponding Secretary – Janet Morgan (’72); Treasurer (General) – Dot Hickman (’57); Treasurer (Scholarship) – Katherine Henry (’45); and, Recording Historian – Cathy Parker (’67).  Continuing as Membership Chair will be Betsy Davis (’59); as Publicity/Social Media Chair is Matt Parker; while Tom Wright (’62) will maintain his duties as Scholarship Committee Chairman.

The Officers and Board members of the Laurel Alumni Association would like to thank all of our members and banquet attendees for making this event such a success.  Special thanks go to the Laurel Historical Society for their excellent display of school artifacts which drew everyone’s attention.   The evening ended with several raffle and 50/50 drawings, which included giving away several collectable, school-related glass pieces generously contributed by Mary Lee Jones, and Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Messick.  More details and pictures can be found on the Laurel Alumni Association’s Facebook page ( http://bitly.com/Laurel_Bulldogs ) and in the next Laurel Alumni Association Newsletter due out near year’s end.
